So why did I
start writing?
Mel’s moments....
As the New Year has started, I’m sure we are all working through Christmas, trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions, and decide what may or may not have worked for us in 2023.
And where does that usually bring us to?
CHANGE. (Shudder!!) I think everyone shudders just a little bit with the thought of changing.
However…change can be good. It can be exciting, it can be downright terrifying, it can be…a lot. Sometimes, honestly, change is bad and difficult and wearying and…any number of “bad” adjectives.
But we don’t grow without change, as people or in our Christian walk.
My life has changed drastically in the past two and a half years. Most days, it has been amazing. Some days, it has been just downright rough. (If you’re new to my writing, please don’t be surprised at anything that comes flying off my fingers – just a warning. I will tell the truth about how I feel, both good and bad. You’re welcome!) Honestly, there is something comforting about things being the same, even if there is lots of negative involved.
We have an idea of what to expect. The comfort of the familiar. We can anticipate emotions, we can prepare.
Change takes that away – sometimes making you feel like the old tablecloth trick. Remember that? The magician (or maybe your cat or dog…or your toddler!) will grab the edge of the tablecloth, and the point is to yank that cloth away fast enough nothing gets pulled off or broken. How often, do you think, that trick is successful unless you really are a professional magician? Let’s go with…not often.
This year, what I am striving to do is EMBRACE change. Look for the unknown.
Last year, I started studying faith in God’s word – and it is essential for the Christian walk. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6, KJV) That sounds like faith is essential. I could list pages of verses about faith. Here’s the big takeaway – we can’t be Christians without faith. And with faith, there is a LOT of unknown. Blindly taking a leap. A step.
And let me tell you – in my world, faith and change have come hand in hand.
My encouragement for January? Be less like me (no seriously, I mean this!!). Don’t look at change as something negative. Look for the amazing. Look for God to work; look for the little things throughout the day where He has answered prayers; where you’ve drawn closer to Him through this “one baby step at a time” faith. It is really, really hard sometimes – if you’re like me, you’ll be digging back through Scripture for reassurance (that’s a good thing!) that somehow it will be OK, even when it doesn’t feel that way.
Make a list every day of what He has done. Make a list of verses that you can refer back to when your faith is shaky. Write down when you have felt His presence and His peace.
I’ll be here, encouraging you to take that next step of faith – because I’ll be doing my best to take that next step for me as well!! Those answers and results might not be in a minute or even days, but we serve a God who will be with you in the waiting.
Here's what people
have to say...
Confessions of Grace is a quick and easy read that will stir the emotions. Melanie opens up about the intimate details of her harsh upbringing as well as the many challenges of adult life. Melanie relies on the grace and redeeming qualities of Jesus Christ to survive. Despite considering giving up, Melanie overcomes through faith the pitfalls of life to become an outstanding cardiovascular ICU nurse and now a successful writer of Christian books. Confessions of Grace exemplifies Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” This book truly will benefit anyone experiencing life’s struggles.
Kudos to Melanie for such an excellent first writing.

Books like this will help people LEARN to identify those triggers and think critically and be like “Ok, I feel this way…. It may seem like a silly response, but I need to get to the root of the why.” So many times we ignore it when we get upset over something frivolous because we feel like we SHOULDNT feel a certain way but regardless, the feeling is valid and when met with love, we can learn how to move past it.
This is honest and raw and truthful and it’s wonderful.
This is what ministry should look like.

I was truly taken back by Melanie’s writing ability. She found a way to effectively minister to people through her story without making it all about her. Also her no-nonsense approach, as well as her ability to hit the nail right on the head really holds your attention.
However, I was not at all shocked about her ability to dig beneath a verse of scripture and mine out its treasures. She has always had that.
As a Pastor it is my privilege and honor to recommend her books to anyone who is discouraged, anyone who has issues, anyone who is struggling emotionally. To God be the glory.

Melanie’s books are written with Biblical truth, humor and raw honesty. She is an investor in people and is passionate about making Jesus known, digging into The Word and glorifying Him.
She has faithfully been speaking truth into my life, encouraging and praying for me for over 30 years, and I am honored to count her as my dearest sister of the heart. She explains Psalm 139 in such a way that gives the reader the reassuring knowledge of God’s love and ultimate design for us.

This book is so good. So often we feel dirty and unworthy when it comes to God’s view of us. But this book helped remind me just how untrue that is. Melanie wrote so beautifully how so many of us feel in this raw and honest book. She was able to capture the scripture to support just how much Jesus loves us.
I have read and recommend this book to others who struggle with these issues. I 10/10 recommend. God has used Melanie in such a mighty way to be able to share his heart and reach others through her. So thankful I was able to read this.

I believe there are lots of reasons writers write. One reason is because it’s therapy for them to write their feelings down on paper. To others, it may just be their job. But for writers like Melanie Thurston, I believe she has a God given desire to really help others. Her books are creative, humorous and full of compassion. But, they are also Biblically based in such a way that can be therapeutic and bring healing to the soul.
Melanie is a great friend, prayer partner, accountability partner but you will also see in this book, that she is a great teacher of the Word. The way she breaks down Psalms 139 is nothing short of magnificent.

I have known Melanie Thurston for over 30 years and have always known her to be outgoing, friendly and someone you just enjoy talking to and that is exactly the feeling you will get with her writing too. In her book Confessions of Grace, you will see the truth about God’s amazing grace in an easy to read, easy to understand format. You will laugh. You will cry. But most importantly, you will clearly see God’s grace and probably in ways you may have never thought of before. You will see it in circumstances in your life when you were completely oblivious to the fact that was working in your life, and you will look back now and wonder how you missed it.
She shows you how it is there in the little everyday things as well as in the really big things, but you will see His grace always there. You need to read this book and I need to read it again.

My Survival Guide

2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power; and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Many times I claimed this verse while writing this book…many times I knew I was writing what God had called me to write, but I wrote through my fear and to my own healing.
My friends reading this, I pray that my story of the grace and love of our almighty God in my life will draw you closer to our Savior and encourage your walk in Him!
Blessings, Melanie.
